Joseph B. Diehl serves as the Deputy Director with over 47 years of experience in association management and accounting/finance. Joe graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1971 with a BS in Accountancy, and from the John Marshall Law School in 1979 with a Juris Doctor degree – specializing in Constitutional Law. He passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant’s Examination in 1974 and the Illinois Bar Examination in 1979. For the first 20 years of his career, he served in a variety of Audit Supervisor, Controller and Chief Financial Officer positions, with a focus on real estate investment, limited partnerships and Real Estate Investment Trusts. Employers included KPMG Peat Marwick, JMB Realty Corporation, Heitman Mortgage Investors (Chicago), and TCW Realty Advisors (Los Angeles).
During the most recent 27 years, Joseph served as Executive Director for membership associations in the Pacific Northwest – in the pension fund real estate investment industry (1990-1993) and the affordable housing sector, including the Northwest Indian Housing Association (1996-2016). His roles included finance/accounting, membership recruitment and retention, training and education, quarterly and annual conference execution, fund development and legislative advocacy (among other things). During the HIV/AIDs crisis, Joe worked in communities of color in Seattle, providing prevention and education outreach services and in supervisory roles, for People of Color Against AIDs Network (1994-1996), becoming its first Fund Development Coordinator and then becoming its first Director of Operations.
Joe and his wife Sue retired in 2016; yet Joe passionately believed that his work was not done in Indian country. To take an active role in improving housing conditions in Indian country, he accepted this position in support of the mission statement of NAIHC, in August 2017. Joe is a member of the American Bar Association, Washington Society of Association Executives, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the National Auctioneer’s Association – where he raises money for nonprofit organizations at no charge, at benefit events. His daughter Jennifer and his two grandsons, AJ and Kyle, still reside in Illinois.
