NAIHC Welcomes HUD–Interior MOU to Advance Tribal Trust Land Homeownership

The National American Indian Housing Council welcomes the September 2026 Memorandum of Understanding between HUD and the Department of the Interior to implement the Tribal Trust Land Homeownership Act of 2025.

The non-binding agreement strengthens coordination to reduce mortgage processing delays on tribal trust lands, supports the Section 184 Indian Home Loan Guarantee Program, and facilitates HUD access to the Trust Asset and Accounting Management System (TAAMS). It also provides for temporary technical assistance support and improved communication with Tribes, TDHEs, and lenders.

NAIHC views the MOU as a positive step toward expanding homeownership opportunities for Native families and encourages members to stay engaged as implementation proceeds.
